TACTIC: Heritage Object
The wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery, and its cargo of 1,400 tons of TNT, sits on the riverbed at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. There is an exclusion zone around it, and it is constantly monitored visually and by radar. Sunk in 1944, it remains at risk of erupting as a result of collision or attack or the spontaneous combustion of its interacting materials, the precedents for attempting to neutralise such a wreck are unpromising.
If it does explode it is expected to send a five metre high wave up the Thames.
Take this as your default model for heritage artefacts.
Visit heritage sites as if you were members of a bomb disposal team. Move very, very carefully. Assess the site’s potential dangers. Then carry out a controlled explanation.
